Dubai Mall, world’s biggest shopping centre, set for $610m expansion

Dubai Mall set for massive $610m expansion

Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping centre and most visited place on Earth in 2023, is poised for a significant expansion.

Emaar Properties, the United Arab Emirates real estate developer, has announced plans to invest 1.5 billion dirhams (approximately $610 million) to add 240 new luxury stores and food and beverage outlets to the already sprawling complex.

The one million square metre mall, which currently houses over 1,200 retail spaces and 200 dining options, is set to become even more impressive.

This expansion builds upon Dubai Mall’s existing attractions, which include the world’s largest suspended aquarium tank, an Emirates A380 simulator, an Olympic-sized ice rink, and the largest indoor VR park globally.

In 2023, Dubai Mall set a new record with 105 million visitors, marking a 19 per cent increase from the previous year.

This surge in popularity has fuelled the current expansion plans, as the mall continues to maintain its status as a global retail and leisure icon.

Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar Properties, commented on the expansion: “The new Dubai Mall expansion is a great addition to one of the most visited sites in the world.

“This expansion reflects Dubai’s ambitious vision to remain at the forefront of global innovation and culture, further solidifying our city’s position as a top global destination.

“Our mall embodies the city’s vibrant spirit and dedication to excellence, turning the leadership’s vision into a reality.”

The expansion is expected to enhance Dubai Mall’s already diverse offerings, which extend beyond shopping to include attractions like the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, the Dubai Fountain Show, and a 155-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton.

These features have helped establish the mall as a key component of Dubai’s tourism industry and economic fabric.

As construction begins, the expansion is set to reinforce Dubai Mall’s position as a premier global destination, offering visitors an even more extensive array of luxury shopping, dining, and entertainment options.
