A AU$1.937 million water infrastructure project in the remote outback township of Dajarra in Queensland is now complete, securing a safe, reliable, and efficient water supply for local residents.
Located approximately 150 kilometres south of Mount Isa, the remote North West Queensland community has faced longstanding challenges with water quality, system reliability, and strict usage restrictions due to an ageing reticulation network.
The completed works involved a total replacement of the town’s water reticulation network, expanding the available bore water supply, and carrying out comprehensive testing and commissioning of the upgraded infrastructure. The new system eliminates historic inefficiencies and strengthens essential municipal services.
The Dajarra Water Security project was jointly funded by the federal government through the National Water Grid Fund, the Queensland government, and the Cloncurry Shire Council.
“Completion of these works is a major step forward for delivering long-term water security in this remote community, providing residents with a safe, reliable and efficient water supply,” said Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Murray Watt.
“Every Queensland community, no matter how remote, deserves access to safe, reliable water.”
Queensland Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy noted that reliable infrastructure underpins regional prosperity, stating the project would support local families, businesses, and future community growth.
Cloncurry Shire Council Mayor Greg Campbell welcomed the milestone, emphasising the project’s transformative impact after years of supply constraints.
“For years, we’ve faced significant challenges with water quality, reliability, and restrictions due to an ageing and inefficient water network,” Campbell said.
“This project has delivered a secure and sustainable water future for the residents and visitors to Dajarra.
“This is fantastic progress for Dajarra, and I’m excited to see the benefits this project will bring to the community, the opportunity for growth and for families to return to town knowing the services are good and jobs are available.”
