The Australian Interior Design Awards have returned for 2026, unveiling a shortlist of 226 projects that reflect the strength and diversity of the nation’s interior design sector.
Now in its 23rd year, the program continues to set the benchmark for excellence and innovation, recognising outstanding work across residential, commercial and public spaces.
Presented by the Design Institute of Australia in partnership with Architecture Media’s InteriorsAu, the awards remain a significant platform for showcasing Australian design both domestically and on the global stage.
The 2026 shortlist highlights the continued evolution of the industry, with projects demonstrating a strong emphasis on creativity, authenticity and purposeful design thinking.
This year’s selection captures a wide-ranging snapshot of contemporary Australian interiors, revealing how designers are responding to shifting cultural, environmental and functional demands.
From refined residential spaces to ambitious public and commercial environments, the shortlisted projects collectively form a narrative that speaks to the ingenuity and adaptability of the profession.
A defining feature of the Australian Interior Design Awards is its peer-judged model, making it the only program of its kind in the country to be assessed entirely by industry professionals.
This approach reinforces the credibility of the awards and ensures that recognition is grounded in expert evaluation and professional standards.
The 2026 jury is led by Geraldine Maher, Director of Maher Design, and brings together a panel of respected practitioners from across Australia.
The jury includes Mardi Doherty, Founder and Principal of Studio Doherty; Iva Foschia, Director of IF Architecture; Paul Foskett, Principal and Head of Interior Design APAC at Populous; Alessandra French, Co-founder of State of Kin; Tim Greer, Director at Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects; Brahman Perera, Director of his eponymous studio; Eva-Marie Prineas, Principal of Studio Prineas; and Kirsti Simpson, Studio Chair and Global Leader of Workplace Interior Design at Woods Bagot.
The breadth of expertise represented on the jury reflects the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary interior design, encompassing residential, hospitality, workplace and civic projects.
Their collective insight plays a key role in identifying projects that push boundaries while maintaining a strong commitment to user experience and design integrity.
Winners and commendations will be announced at the Gala Presentation Dinner, scheduled to take place at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney on June 12.
The event is expected to bring together leading designers, architects and industry stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of the sector.
As the awards continue to evolve, they remain a vital platform for recognising innovation and elevating the profile of Australian interior design.
The 2026 shortlist not only underscores the depth of talent within the industry but also signals its ongoing contribution to shaping meaningful and engaging built environments.
