Auckland Council will begin construction this year on the highly anticipated Te Hono project in Avondale, with the new community hub and library scheduled to open in mid-2027.
The development, overseen by the Auckland Urban Development Office (UDO) on behalf of Council, will deliver a multi-purpose facility featuring a library, community spaces, and an upgraded town square.
The Whau Local Board approved the Avondale site in December 2018, clearing the way for a major investment in local community infrastructure.
Preparatory works began in November 2024 with the removal of existing buildings, followed by early site activities in June this year, including brick paving and water metering.
Richard Davison, priority location director at the Auckland Urban Development Office, said CMP Construction stood out during the competitive retendering process, which drew bids from 20 companies.
“CMP Construction came out on top, not just for their expertise but for their vision. They are aiming to exceed our social procurement targets, will create new jobs within the local community and are committed to achieving at least a Green Star 5 sustainability rating for the build,” Davison said.
When completed, Te Hono will house a library with a children’s area, community hall, creative spaces, a community kitchen, parenting room, and reserve and street-level meeting rooms, alongside essential amenities.
The UDO will also enhance the adjoining town square and outdoor areas, complementing the Council-led construction of the main facility.
Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas said the new hub will serve as a vital centre for residents.
“Te Hono will be a place to connect, celebrate and build community for generations to come, and I’m looking forward to watching our community hub become a reality as momentum speeds up,” she said.
