Brabham Estate wins Sustainability Excellence Award

Brabham Estate has been recognised with the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) WA Award for Excellence in Sustainability, highlighting its achievement in delivering a large-scale residential community that combines environmental excellence with affordability and liveability.

Developed by Peet in partnership with DevelopmentWA, Brabham is setting new standards for environmentally responsible urban design.

At the heart of its sustainability credentials is the Constructed Wetlands System, which has transformed 4.2 hectares of degraded agricultural land into a functional ecosystem that delivers water quality treatment, flood detention, and ecological restoration.

Beyond its technical function, the wetlands also provide residents with access to a thriving natural green space.

Complementing the wetlands, Brabham supports households to adopt sustainable practices by offering solar PV systems, smart home technology, and energy-efficient lighting.

Peet Interim CEO Brett Fullarton said the award underscores Brabham’s role in shaping modern, future-focused communities.

“This award recognises that smart community planning can achieve both sustainability and liveability,” said Fullarton.

“Through innovative initiatives such as the Better Life Bonus and smart technology in public spaces, we’re delivering real environmental benefits without adding financial pressure on residents.

“Brabham is a powerful example of what’s possible when sustainability is embedded at every stage of development.”

Brabham’s innovations extend across the community, including:

  • Twice the mandated number of street trees to enhance green cover and improve air quality
  • Energy-efficient lighting, smart bin sensors, public wi-fi, weather stations, and smart irrigation systems at Honeycomb Park
  • NBN Smart Cities technology to support efficient energy use and connectivity
  • Collaborative initiatives with the City of Swan, such as Eco-Fest, Repair Café, and sustainability-focused workshops

The estate also showcases leadership in energy-efficient housing design through its Green Homes Display, featuring a 9.2-star NatHERS-rated home, which demonstrates the benefits of reducing household energy costs without sacrificing comfort.

This latest award builds on Brabham’s list of sustainability credentials, including a 6-Star Green Star Communities rating and the 2023 Platinum Waterwise Development Award.

Together, these accolades position Brabham as one of Western Australia’s most sustainable and liveable new communities.
