The Hills Shire Council has given the green light to the amended design of the McCall Community Hub — the project that is set to transform the heart of Sydney’s northwest.
Designed by international architecture firm Plus Architecture for the McCall Gardens Community Foundation, the approved design focuses on inclusivity, accessibility, and wellbeing for the local community.
Perched on a hill overlooking Box Hill, the new design offers an improved and more inclusive experience for people of all abilities.
The $35 million revitalised Hub incorporates three unique heritage buildings, marking a new chapter for the site while preserving its historical significance.
Plus Architecture Principal Gabriel Duque described the design as a ‘community beacon,’ aiming to set a new standard for holistic and inclusive design.
The updated design emphasises integration with the local community and aims to overcome stigma through thoughtful design elements.
The project partners conducted extensive research to ensure the site’s challenges, including its sloped terrain, would not impede accessibility.
The design includes features such as sensory experiences, improved wayfinding measures, and a sensory garden to support the varying needs of people with disabilities.
McCall CEO Belinda Colombrita praised the design’s focus on enriching human connection and addressing stigmas about environments for people living with disabilities.
She emphasised the importance of inclusivity and equity in providing services and facilities across communities.
The McCall Community Hub will feature a café, multi-purpose rooms, playground facilities, and a swimming pool accommodating up to 1500 children per week for swimming school.
Construction is set to commence in May 2024 and complete by October 2025, with the hub complementing the broader Box Hill Master Plan as an important community destination.
Plus Architecture Director Sumedh Kataria highlighted the project’s contribution to the firm’s portfolio of community-focused projects, showcasing a commitment to delivering meaningful spaces that positively impact communities.
The McCall Community Hub’s approval marks a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for the local community — reflecting a commitment to holistic and human-centred design principles.
