KPAT Hotels will breathe new life into one of Gladstone’s most historic pubs, with a major refurbishment of The Grand Hotel set to commence this month.
Built in the 1890s, The Grand Hotel has long been a landmark in the heart of Gladstone.
The refurbishment will restore the venue’s character while creating a contemporary hospitality experience for locals and visitors.
Construction will begin this month, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Importantly, The Grand Hotel will continue trading throughout the refurbishment, with works staged to minimise disruption for patrons.
The project will be delivered by KPAT Hotels, with the company managing every stage of the refurbishment from planning and design through to construction and operations.
KPAT Hotels Managing Director Kenneth Wagner said the investment reflected the company’s long-term commitment to Queensland’s hospitality and tourism industries, and in the case of The Grand Hotel, preserving an important piece of the state’s hospitality history while ensuring it remains relevant for future generations.
Wagner said historic hotels are the heart of many Queensland communities, noting that The Grand Hotel has been part of Gladstone’s story for well over a century.
“Our vision is to respectfully restore the character that people know and love while creating a venue that delivers a high-quality experience for today’s guests,” said Wagner.
“We’re not simply renovating a pub – we’re investing in an important community asset that has welcomed generations of locals and visitors.”
The interior refurbishment has been designed by Taryn Raso, who also designed KPAT’s flagship venue Sully’s Rooftop and the newly opened Avani Mooloolaba Beach Hotel.
Drawing inspiration from the building’s heritage, the new design will celebrate the hotel’s original architecture while introducing warm contemporary finishes, improved functionality and inviting spaces for dining, socialising and entertainment.
Wagner said KPAT’s ability to manage the project internally was a significant advantage, allowing it to oversee every aspect of a project, from concept and design through to construction, delivery and ongoing operation.
“That gives us greater control over quality, timelines and investment, while ensuring every decision supports the long-term success of the venue,” said Wagner.
“We take a long-term ownership approach to every asset we develop or refurbish because we’re building venues that communities can enjoy for decades to come.”
The Grand Hotel sits alongside the Oaks Gladstone Grand Hotel, also owned and operated by KPAT Hotels. The 144-room property features contemporary serviced apartments, a swimming pool, gymnasium and a central CBD location, making it a popular choice for both corporate and leisure travellers.
Together, the two properties strengthen KPAT Hotels’ investment in Gladstone’s accommodation and hospitality offering while supporting tourism, business travel and the local economy.
