Tasmania to rezone five hectares of state land for residential development

17 Aug, 2026

The Tasmanian government will rezone nearly five hectares of state-owned land across northern Tasmania for residential development.

Two Housing Land Supply Orders were tabled in Parliament for Ravenswood and Penguin.

The proposed rezonings in Ravenswood and Penguin are expected to yield approximately 70 new residential lots, expanding housing opportunities across the state’s North and North West regions.

Under the Housing Land Supply (Ravenswood) Order 2026, approximately 2.7 hectares of land at Lot 1 Prossers Forest Road in Ravenswood will be converted for residential use. Subject to approval, the site is slated to accommodate around 25 residential lots.

In the North West, the Housing Land Supply (Penguin) Order 2026 targets approximately two hectares at 1 Ironcliffe Road in Penguin. That development could facilitate roughly 45 new residential lots to support local housing demand.

Minister for Housing and Planning Kerry Vincent said the housing orders represent a vital mechanism for unlocking underutilised land and bringing forward development opportunities.

“Our government is unlocking land to support housing growth in communities right across the state,” Vincent said.

“If approved, the rezoning at Ravenswood is expected to deliver approximately 25 residential lots, creating opportunities for more Tasmanians to build and own a home.”

“The Penguin rezoning could facilitate around 45 residential lots, creating new opportunities for Penguin,” he added.

Minister Vincent noted that the land supply orders form a key component of the Tasmanian government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which aims to establish well-connected, accessible communities.

The government is also progressing a broader planning reform agenda to accelerate housing delivery across Tasmania.

Key measures underway include comprehensive reviews of Regional Land Use Strategies, targeted housing diversity reforms, and ongoing operational enhancements to the overarching Housing Land Supply framework.
