The Tasmanian government has hit the halfway mark in its efforts to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes, with the latest data revealing nearly 5,000 homes and land lots have now been completed or released.
An under-construction, 56-unit social and affordable housing complex in Bridgewater is on track to wrap up in 2027, with tenancy and property management to be overseen by Loreto Community Housing.
According to the government’s latest housing dashboard, the state’s multi-year pipeline has already yielded more than 2,200 social housing units and supported accommodation properties, with an additional 1,300 homes currently under development.
The strategy also targets crisis and private rental markets. The data shows 119 crisis accommodation units have been added to the state’s pool, while more than 1,100 households have been successfully supported into affordable private rental agreements.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent said the state was systematically tackling supply shortages across the entire housing spectrum.
“We continue to deliver new homes and provide support for Tasmanians right across the housing spectrum, from social housing to crisis accommodation to affordable home ownership through our MyHome Program,” Vincent said.
“Over 2,200 social housing units and supported accommodation have been delivered, with 1300 more in the pipeline.”
The government’s MyHome shared-equity scheme has reportedly assisted more than 1,200 Tasmanians into home ownership.
Additionally, the state has released 149 affordable residential lots of land to fast-track new builds, which Minister Vincent noted could see eligible buyers leverage Tasmania’s AU$20,000 First Home Owner Grant.
“These homes will provide affordable accommodation for many Tasmanians, and I look forward to seeing themit completed,” Vincent added.
