The Tasmanian and federal governments have signed a major housing deal designed to unlock 4,000 new dwellings across the state, with more than half of the supply reserved exclusively for first home buyers.
The deal will see the federal government provide AU$165 million in financial support. The package consists of AU$115 million in concessional loans and AU$50 million in direct grant funding, aimed at tackling Tasmania’s tightening housing market.
The program will deliver enabling infrastructure in Brighton, Sorell and Meander Valley, unlocking around 2,700 homes, with almost 1,100 reserved for those buying their first home.
The federal government will provide an initial AU$35 million concessional loan to ensure these infrastructure projects can begin immediately, circumventing typical budget delays.
The properties will be concentrated around the state’s key population hubs, including Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie.
Minister for Housing, Clare O’Neil said: “We’re determined to make it easier for young people and first home buyers to achieve the dream of owning a home – with no competition from investors.”
While the funding is immediate, the first of the new homes are expected to reach the market in the 2027–28 financial year.
The initiative complements broader federal efforts, including the National Planning Reform Blueprint and a push to train 1,500 new Tasmanian tradespeople through Free TAFE and apprenticeship incentives.
The agreement represents a significant portion of the federal government’s broader pledge to build 100,000 homes for first home buyers nationally, ensuring Tasmania remains a focus in the country’s housing supply strategy.
Tasmanian Minister for Housing, Kerry Vincent said: “Every single house built in Tasmania makes a difference, and this partnership is a huge win for the entire state.
“We want as many Tasmanians as possible enjoying the security of owning their own home, and delivering more supply is central to achieving this goal.”
