The first students have commenced training at the newly established Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence, a national hub designed to drive innovation and skills development across the building sector.
The centre aims to help Victoria expand its construction workforce, supporting the state’s effort to deliver more housing, more efficiently, and with a smaller environmental footprint.
The inaugural short course, focused on modern methods of construction, marks the beginning of a new chapter in construction training.
The pilot program introduces participants to prefabrication, modular, and volumetric construction — techniques that are reshaping the way homes and infrastructure are built in Australia.
Developed by Melbourne Polytechnic in close collaboration with industry, the course is being delivered from a newly refurbished facility at the institute’s Heidelberg campus.
Melbourne Polytechnic is leading the establishment of the Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence in partnership with TAFEs, universities, unions, employers, and industry organisations.
Planning is also underway for a purpose-built training facility at the Heidelberg site.
The upcoming facility will feature cutting-edge construction technology, digital tools, and flexible learning and collaboration spaces dedicated to industry training, applied research, innovation showcases, and joint projects between students, educators, and industry leaders.
With nearly 70,000 new workers expected to join Victoria’s construction workforce by 2027, investment in programs and facilities such as the Centre of Excellence will be crucial to meeting the demand for skilled tradespeople.
Backed by a $50 million joint investment from the Victorian and Australian governments, the centre will build capacity within the sector and create more opportunities for people pursuing secure and rewarding careers in construction.
