In a significant move to enhance transparency and accountability in the building approvals process, the New South Wales (NSW) government has unveiled a new initiative.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to meet ambitious housing targets and restore consumer confidence in the construction industry.
The centrepiece of this initiative is a new reporting dashboard designed to provide real-time data on the performance of local councils in processing building approvals.
This tool will allow stakeholders, including developers, builders, and the general public, to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of council operations in meeting housing targets.
The dashboard is integral to the government’s commitment to deliver 377,000 homes by mid-2029 under the National Housing Accord.
Accompanying the dashboard is a Statement of Expectations, which outlines the standards and timelines that councils are expected to meet in the building approvals process.
This statement aims to hold councils accountable for their performance and ensure that they are working efficiently to support the state’s housing goals.
The Master Builders Association of NSW (MBA) has expressed strong support for the government’s initiative.
The MBA believes that increased transparency and accountability will lead to more efficient building approvals, ultimately benefiting the entire construction industry and consumers.
The association applauded the government’s efforts to create a more predictable and reliable approval process, which is crucial for planning and executing construction projects.
The MBA Executive Director Brian Seidler said the industry strongly supports measures that enable a clear and easily accessible platform that reports on average building approval and lodgement times.
“In the past, consumers and builders have not been able to access information about the potential delays to their development applications. This changes everything.
“Now, the industry will be able to access information which will allow for better coordination of projects.
“This is something that should be replicated right across the country.
This initiative is part of a larger reform agenda by the NSW government to overhaul the construction industry.
The reforms aim to establish end-to-end accountability for building work, consolidate key regulatory elements, and enhance consumer protections.
The government is also expanding the Building Commissioner’s powers to include commercial buildings and introducing new licensing schemes for builders and designers undertaking commercial work.
The NSW government’s new reporting dashboard and Statement of Expectations represent a significant step towards a more transparent and accountable building approvals process.
By holding councils accountable and providing stakeholders with real-time data, the government aims to streamline the approval process, meet housing targets, and restore confidence in the construction industry.
This initiative has garnered strong support from industry leaders and is expected to have a positive impact on the efficiency and reliability of building approvals in NSW.
