The Western Australian government is seeking proposals to breathe new life into one of Perth’s most significant state heritage-listed landmarks, opening an Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the Sunset Heritage Precinct.
Spanning 7.9 hectares along the Swan River in Dalkeith, the former hospital site has remained largely unused since its closure in 1995. The government is now calling on developers and organisations to transform the sprawling precinct into a dynamic, creative, and cultural destination.
Unlike previous attempts to revitalise the site, this new EOI process offers significantly greater flexibility. Proponents are being invited to pitch diverse options, ranging from whole-of-site redevelopments to proposals focusing on individual buildings or partial site solutions.
Respondents will need to outline clear strategies for tenure, financial investment, architectural design, and the long-term conservation of the existing heritage assets.
While the grounds were opened to the general public in 2016, followed by major community landscape upgrades in 2019, including picnic and barbecue facilities, the historic hospital structures themselves have long awaited a sustainable future.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk said the reactivation of the Sunset Heritage Precinct represents a rare opportunity to unlock major economic and community benefits for Western Australia while safeguarding its unique history.
“The Expression of Interest has been designed to encourage strong, innovative proposals,” McGurk said.
“This presents an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of history in both preserving and transforming the precinct into a dynamic, creative, and cultural destination.”
The redevelopment aligns with the state government’s broader economic priority to foster a more vibrant, diversified, and creative economy across the state.
