The exterior of the new Sydney Fish Market has been completed, offering the public its first full look at the landmark’s striking architecture ahead of its official opening on Monday, 19 January 2026.
Positioned on Sydney Harbour just west of the Harbour Bridge, the market’s wave-like roof is set to become an iconic feature of the city’s skyline, echoing the cultural significance of the Opera House to the east.
At 200 metres long, the sweeping roof is the building’s most distinctive element — an engineering marvel weighing 2,500 tonnes and composed of 407 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams.
Designed to be illuminated for special events, the structure blends aesthetic ambition with sustainable innovation.
The development is targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating, aligning with the NSW government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The building integrates passive solar design to naturally light upper levels, harvests and recycles rainwater, and generates solar energy to support its operations.
Additional construction milestones include the installation of 1,700 glass louvre panels on the façade, 481 marine piles supporting the building, wharfs, and promenade, and the pouring of 34,000 cubic metres of concrete — equivalent to nearly 14 Olympic swimming pools.
The roof spans 20,000 square metres, roughly the size of four football fields.
More than just a marketplace, the new Sydney Fish Market will offer a comprehensive culinary and cultural experience, featuring a fresh seafood hall, specialty retailers, restaurants, cafes, and a dedicated seafood school.
It will be easily accessible via two nearby light rail stops, a shared pedestrian and cycle path, and future connections to the Pyrmont metro station and a public ferry wharf.
The project is being delivered by Infrastructure NSW on behalf of the NSW government, with Multiplex as the construction partner.
The design is led by 3XN/GXN Architects in collaboration with BVN and landscape architects Aspect Studios.
Steve Kamper, Minister for Lands and Property, said: “As Sydney continues to evolve as a global city, the new Sydney Fish Market stands as a beacon for our future, connecting communities, supporting local jobs, and welcoming millions of visitors each year.
Kamper said the new Sydney Fish Market would highlight the city’s finest seafood and produce while enhancing Sydney’s profile as a premier global destination.
He added that its distinctive design and lively precinct would play a key role in shaping the city’s next chapter and driving long-term benefits for the local economy and tourism sector.
Tom Gellibrand, Chief Executive, Infrastructure NSW, said: “Excitement around the new Sydney Fish Market is growing every day as the world-class tourist attraction now looks complete.”
Gellibrand said the new Sydney Fish Market would deliver an impressive and authentic seafood experience for around six million visitors each year.
He noted that construction was entering its final stages with partner Multiplex, ahead of handing over the site for fitout and operational preparations.
Fred Holt, Sydney Partner, 3XN/GXN Architects, said: “Every Sydneysider has a story about the Fish Market, often from their youth.
“With the new Fish Market, our goal is to preserve the authenticity and spectacle of a working market while opening it more fully as a catalyst for community life.”
Holt said the project was driven by a strong focus on sustainability and designed to celebrate its distinctive Sydney Harbour location.
He added that the goal was for the new Sydney Fish Market to become a welcoming, year‑round gathering place for both locals and visitors.
Catherine Skinner, BVN Principal, said: “The new Sydney Fish Market is more than a building — it’s a celebration of food, place and people.
“BVN are proud to have helped create this civic landmark that brings them together.”
Sacha Coles, Global Design Director, Aspect Studios, said: “The new Harbour Landscape at Sydney Fish Market reclaims a vital moment on the foreshore walk, creating a green necklace of open space around Blackwattle Bay and a vibrant world-class destination for the community and visitors to gather, connect, and enjoy the iconic Sydney Harbour.”
Daniel Jarosch, Chief Executive, Sydney Fish Market, said: “We’re proud to be the beating heart of Australia’s seafood industry, and now we will have a new home befitting the stunning produce coming through the Market every day from NSW fishers and beyond.”
Jarosch said the new Sydney Fish Market would unite fresh, sustainable seafood, diverse dining options, specialty retailers, and educational experiences under its distinctive wave‑shaped roof, creating an authentic destination for locals and visitors from across Australia and beyond.
