The METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension officially opened today, marking a significant milestone in Perth’s public transportation infrastructure.
The new line extends the Joondalup Line 14.5 kilometres north of Butler, connecting tens of thousands of residents in Perth’s rapidly growing northern suburbs to the rail network.
The extension includes three new stations at Alkimos, Eglinton, and Yanchep, each equipped with modern facilities and ample parking.
Yanchep Station boasts over 900 parking bays, while the Alkimos and Eglinton stations offer 700 and 400 bays respectively.
Premier Roger Cook hailed the project as transformative for the region.
“This is what METRONET is all about – transforming suburbs, slashing travel time, reducing travel costs and creating jobs,” Cook stated.
The project, jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments, is expected to stimulate residential and commercial development in the surrounding areas.
It will provide new housing opportunities linked to major infrastructure and services.
Environmental considerations were also a key part of the project.
The extension includes three green fauna bridges, the first of their kind over the rail in Western Australia, ensuring safe passage for native wildlife across the rail corridor.
The new line significantly reduces travel time for northern suburbs residents. A journey from Yanchep to Perth CBD will now take only 49 minutes, with a fare of $4.68 under the Cook Labor Government’s two-zone fare cap.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasised the project’s impact on future growth: “This extension will give over 169,000 future Yanchep-Two Rocks residents another transport option to travel around Perth for work, study, and recreation.”
The Yanchep Rail Extension is the ninth METRONET project to be completed, with construction having begun in late 2019. It supported approximately 1,370 local jobs during its development.
As Perth’s northern coastal corridor continues to be one of Australia’s fastest-growing areas, this new rail line is poised to play a crucial role in connecting developing suburbs to the Perth CBD and airport, supporting the region’s ongoing growth and development.
