The Western Australian government’s METRONET program has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the New Bayswater Station — one of the largest stations outside of Perth’s CBD.
The station is set to become a pivotal meeting point for three separate train lines, already servicing the Midland and Airport Lines, with trains from the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line expected to commence services later this year.
The elevated four-platform station features a new bus interchange, car park, bike parking facilities, and ten new retail spaces around its base.
An expression of interest process is currently underway for these retail spaces, with the first businesses expected to occupy them later this year.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti stated: “Right across Perth, we are seeing communities being transformed and better-connected thanks to our METRONET program, and I am thrilled to see the New Bayswater Station project reach completion.”
WA Premier Roger Cook highlighted the transformative impact of the METRONET program, as he said: “METRONET is transforming our suburbs and setting up our communities for the long-term. The METRONET New Bayswater Station is a perfect example – a stunning new station, breathing new life into the Bayswater town centre and opening up new opportunities for hospitality, retail, and public open space.”
The project, which commenced in late 2020, has been complex, delivering an elevated station in a constrained space while connecting three separate train lines into one.
Significant moments included the demolition of the iconic Bayswater Bridge, which garnered huge community attention.
Plans are in place for a public art installation utilising a section of the old bridge.
Maylands MLA Lisa Baker praised the community and local businesses for their patience throughout the project, as she said: “I know the past few years have been challenging, but I want to commend the community and local businesses for their patience as we transformed this part of our community.”
With major works now wrapping up, attention has turned to landscaping around the station, including the planting of over 170 trees and 16,000 plants and shrubs in new garden beds.
Several public art pieces are also being finalised and will be installed around the station in the coming months.
The completion of the New Bayswater Station is not only a significant achievement for the METRONET program but also marks a major milestone for the Bayswater town centre, signalling a new era of connectivity and urban revitalisation for the area.
