The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) has put out a call for community feedback on the refurbishment and upgrade of the InterContinental Hotel on 115-119 Macquarie Street in Sydney’s CBD.
The Department’s Executive Director of Regions, Industry and Key Sites Anthea Sargeant said community input is a vital part of the assessment process and encouraged everyone to have their say on the proposal which seeks to make internal and external alterations to the hotel tower, including:
- External upgrades to the street level, including new curved glass facade;
- Restoring the heritage facades fronting the Cortile lounge by removing the 1980s additions and installing a new central bar to improve access and movement;
- Refurbishments to Café Opera to remove kitchen elements and replace the carpet, lighting and furniture; and
- Adding a steel and glass extension to the rooftop level, including a glass skylight.
“The proposed works were approved as part of a separate application in January this year and this application seeks approval to allow construction to begin,” Ms Sargeant said.
“If approved, the proposal would enable the comprehensive upgrade of the existing InterContinental Hotel facilities, while maintaining the unique heritage fabric of the building.”
DPIE has stated that no works will be undertaken to Transport House at this stage.
The proposed development has the potential to create 35 to 40 construction jobs and 50 jobs once operational, while generating more than $10 million in economic benefit.
“Our role is to assess the application in consultation with the local community, government agencies and stakeholders and we are encouraging the community to share their views on the proposed changes to the InterContinental Hotel,” Ms Sargeant commented.
“After the exhibition closes, the Department will review all community submissions received, along with feedback from other government agencies and councils as part of its rigorous assessment process.”
The community is invited to have their say on the project from 10 September until 7 October 2020.
