The winners of the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards have been announced, showcasing outstanding contributions to architectural design across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Recognising excellence in collaboration, sustainability, and innovation, this year’s awards highlight the transformative power of architecture in shaping our communities.
The prestigious Victorian Architecture Medal was awarded to Public Realm Lab, recognising its exceptional contribution to the built environment.
Public Realm Lab won three awards for the Powerhouse Place project in Mildura — the Regional Prize, the overall prize for Urban Design, and Public Architecture.
As the most awarded project of the year, Powerhouse Place demonstrates a commitment to collaborative design, sustainability, and community.
A total of 15 Named Awards, 24 Architecture Awards, and 22 Commendations were presented following rigorous assessments by independent juries, celebrating 228 projects that demonstrate a commitment to environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
Victorian State President, David Wagner FRAIA, commented on the significance of this year’s awards: “This year’s awards recipients have indelibly shaped our built environment, showcasing the world-class ingenuity and expertise that resides in our state.
“The impressive range and diversity of winning projects are a testament to the strength of the architectural profession in Victoria, illustrating architecture’s broad reach in urban, suburban, and rural contexts.”
Victorian State Manager, Daniel Moore RAIA, added: “Winners of this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards represent a milestone in the field, showcasing the importance of sustainable design principles in the best projects.”
Noticeable in this year’s winners is the strength of architecture in regional Victoria, with both sustainable merit and a strong connection to Country.
Awarded projects exemplifying this theme include the Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre in Cowes, Phillip Island by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects for Public Architecture, and the Wangaratta District Specialist School by Sibling Architecture, which won the EmAGN Project Award and was commended in the Educational Architecture category.
The EmAGN Project Award celebrates excellence by acknowledging projects where EmAGN members, within 15 years of graduation and 10 years of registration, have made significant contributions to a project.
The 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards have once again demonstrated the vital role of architecture in enhancing our communities, emphasising sustainability, innovation, and collaboration. The awarded projects serve as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of architects in Victoria.
