The City of Sydney has received top honours in a global sustainability report, scoring highest in the Asia Pacific region.
The CDP organisation ranks more than 570 cities to identify those excelling on climate disclosure. Sydney received top score alongside Cleveland, Durban, Mexico City and Paris.
Formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project, CDP is the most comprehensive collection of self-reported environmental data in the world. The data collected by the company is used to create detailed analysis on environmental risks, impacts and opportunities.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the number one regional ranking recognised the City’s achievements in tackling climate issues.
“Through Sustainable Sydney 2030, we have set ourselves some of the most ambitious sustainability targets in the world,” the Lord Mayor said.
“To achieve our goal of net zero emissions by 2050, we are working with developers and the community to raise sustainability standards across the entire local government area. We are also investing in green infrastructure and increasing our renewable energy use.
Kyra Appleby, Director of Cities, States and Regions at CDP said cities have a huge role to play in the sustainable transition.
“We urge all cities to disclose to CDP, and to work together to build a sustainable and thriving economy that works for both people and planet in the long-term.”
