Collie businesses receive boost from government grants

The Western Australian government has announced a significant investment in Collie’s local businesses and attractions through the Collie Futures Small Grants Program.

Five recipients will share $380,314 in funding, aimed at diversifying the local economy and creating new job opportunities.

The Coalfields Museum and Historical Research Centre has been awarded $95,000 to plan its transformation into a contemporary tourist attraction.

This funding will support internal concept design, ready-to-build plans, and business case development for the museum’s redevelopment.

The Victoria Hotel will receive $100,000 to upgrade its commercial kitchen, complementing ongoing accommodation improvements to meet rising demand in the town.

Additionally, Coaltown Coffee has been granted $66,796 to fit out a coffee van trailer and install a commercial coffee machine, enabling them to service various local venues and tourist destinations.

The Collie Gallery Group will receive $28,100 to host the Collie Art Prize 2025, an event that promotes local artists and attracts visitors to the region.

In the manufacturing sector, Beer Industries Group has been awarded $90,750 to expand its metal fabrication operations, allowing for increased capability and new employment opportunities.

Regional Development Minister Don Punch emphasised the importance of these grants in unlocking business potential and creating a strong future for Collie.

“Economic diversity is an important factor when it comes to promoting liveability and stimulating regional growth,” he stated.

The Collie Futures Small Grants Program is part of the wider Collie Futures Fund, offering grants up to $100,000 to support businesses and not-for-profit organisations in diversifying the local economy.

This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to transition Collie away from its dependence on coal and coal-fired energy, with over $662 million allocated to the region’s transition.

As Collie continues to evolve, these grants are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the town’s economic landscape and enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.
