Perth Airport has announced a collaboration with local contractor Georgiou to develop its first multi-storey car park, a move that is expected to play a pivotal role in the ongoing transformation of Airport Central.
Set to commence construction in mid-2024, this project signifies a significant step forward in enhancing access to the area and is poised to make a substantial impact on the overall airport experience.
Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that the new car park, strategically located on the western side of the existing Short Term car park in front of Terminal 1, will cater to the growing demand for parking close to the terminals.
The car park is expected to span six levels and offers a range of parking products, including hourly, overnight, premium, motorcycle, small charter vehicle (SCV) pick-up, ACROD parking, parents with prams, and car rental parking.
The facility will be seamlessly linked to the Skybridge, providing travellers with a covered walkway to Terminal 1 and greatly enhancing convenience.
In addition to the new car park, the project includes a multi-modal transport interchange (MMTI) on the ground floor twhich will serve as a dedicated pick-up and drop-off point for the terminals, which will replace the current forecourt road. This is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and access to the airport by road.
Other features of the project include the closure of the current forecourt road (except for emergency vehicles), the creation of a new wider, landscaped forecourt, and the expansion of the current T2 Short Term Car Park, which will include five EV charging bays.
Furthermore, the project will involve the realignment of the road network at Terminal 2, further enhancing access and egress for passengers.
The development is expected to not only improve access and convenience for travellers but also contribute to the airport’s sustainability goals and support the region’s economic growth.
While acknowledging that there may be some short-term inconvenience during the construction phase, Waters highlighted the long-term benefits that the project will bring to travellers, airline partners, and businesses operating at the airport.
