The New York state government has launched a major road resurfacing initiative on Long Island, targeting 88 lane kilometres across five key stretches in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
This US$16.6 million investment aims to enhance safety and improve mobility for both motorists and pedestrians, with construction set to continue throughout the summer and completion expected by the end of the year.
NY Governor Kathy Hochul stated: “With the onset of warmer weather, we are delivering on our promise to modernise Long Island’s infrastructure and invest in safer, smoother travel for all New Yorkers.
“These roadway improvements will help reduce congestion, enhance safety and strengthen the connections that keep our communities and economy moving forward.
“From daily commuters to local businesses, this investment supports the people who rely on these roads every single day.”
The resurfacing work involves milling away deteriorated asphalt and replacing it with a new, smooth surface.
Targeted locations include:
- Meadowbrook State Parkway between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road in the Town of Hempstead
- State Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) at the William Floyd Parkway interchange in Brookhaven
- State Route 454 (Veterans Memorial Highway) in Smithtown
- State Route 110 in Huntington
- State Route 106 (Newbridge Road) in Hempstead
In addition to new road surfaces, the initiative will install highly reflective lane markings, new crosswalks, and upgrade over 120 sidewalk curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, further improving pedestrian access and safety.
Most of the work will be scheduled during off-peak hours to minimise traffic disruptions, in line with New York State’s Drivers First Initiative.
Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, highlighted the broader impact: “Thanks to Governor Hochul’s leadership, New York State is making historic investments in infrastructure that will ensure the long-term prosperity and well-being of our local communities.
“By resurfacing these five roadways, we are literally paving the way towards easier commutes and improved quality of life for tens of thousands of Long Islanders.”
This latest round of improvements builds on previous projects completed on the Long Island Expressway, Meadowbrook State Parkway, Northern State Parkway, State Route 109, and the Southern State Parkway.
Earlier this month, the state government also initiated a US$86.7 million pavement improvement project on a nearly eight-kilometre stretch of the New England Thruway (I-95) in Westchester County, underscoring New York’s ongoing commitment to modernising its transportation infrastructure.
The Long Island resurfacing projects are expected to deliver smoother rides, reduced congestion, and safer roads for all users by year’s end.
