Foster + Partners has revealed its design for the first residential-led development on Laheq Island, located in the Red Sea.
Commissioned by Red Sea Global, a real estate developer, the project aims to transform the 400-hectare island into a luxury green community.
The design concept, named ‘Forever Garden’, emphasises the integration of plant life and greenery throughout the masterplan.
A key feature of the project is an 800-metre-diameter structure known as ‘The Ring’, which surrounds a lagoon and white-sand beaches.
This design is strategically placed at the island’s centre to protect the natural habitats in the surrounding areas.
“Our vision is grounded in a deep appreciation for Laheq Island’s outstanding natural beauty. Residents and visitors are invited into a serene garden that engages all the senses and offers panoramic views of the magnificent surroundings,” said Norman Foster, founder and executive chair of Foster + Partners.
‘The Ring’ will feature luxury apartments, two hotels, and a souk, elevated above the water.
The structure is designed with sustainability in mind, utilising recycled water for plant irrigation and incorporating pergolas and shaded canopies.
The island will also include a 115-berth marina, a beach club, sailing and watersports schools, a racket club, a fitness centre, and an 18-hole golf course with a clubhouse.
Residential communities will be located in the south, centre, and north of the island, with luxury villas along the waterfront.
Gerard Evenden, studio head at Foster + Partners, noted: “When designing Laheq, our goal was to add as little as possible to the island, while totally immersing residents and guests in nature.
“During planning, it became clear ‘The Ring’ formation was the best design choice to minimise human impact, while also offering spectacular landscaping, 360-degree sea views, and private lagoon access.”
The architectural style will feature layered geometric timber frames to unify the different elements of the development.
Foster + Partners recently celebrated the topping out of another of their projects, the Safra National Bank tower in Florida, US.
