AUSTRALIA — Marriott International has officially opened its first hotel in Adelaide, marking a significant milestone for the global hospitality giant in South Australia.
The Adelaide Marriott Hotel, nestled within the iconic 152-year-old General Post Office (GPO) building, brings luxury accommodation to the heart of the city’s Central Business District.
The $200 million development, built by BESIX Watpac, showcases a seamless blend of heritage architecture and modern design.
The 14-storey structure features 285 spacious guestrooms, including a presidential suite, offering panoramic views of Adelaide’s skyline.
Al Crosby, BESIX Watpac’s General Manager for Victoria and South Australia, highlighted the project’s complexity and the team’s dedication.
“Construction commenced in March 2021 — a difficult time for the world and the construction industry. Our team worked through this challenging period, and I’m incredibly proud of the work they’ve accomplished,” Crosby stated.
The hotel’s construction involved impressive engineering feats, including the use of 620 tonnes of structural steel for the tower and 137 tonnes for the heritage area.
Over 7,500 cubic metres of concrete were poured, and 1,092 individual exterior scallop sections were installed to create the building’s distinctive façade.
Nicho Teng, Managing Director of Greaton, the property developer behind the project, praised BESIX Watpac’s expertise in managing the design and construction process.
The Adelaide Marriott Hotel boasts world-class amenities, including:
- A Club Lounge for elite Marriott Bonvoy members
- Multiple dining venues, such as Penny Blue and Exchange Lane
- An 18-metre indoor swimming pool and fitness centre
- Over 762 square metres of meeting and event space
Paul Gallop, General Manager of Adelaide Marriott Hotel, emphasised the property’s role in showcasing the city’s attractions.
“From premier cultural, sporting, culinary, and business events, to exploring world-renowned wine regions, Adelaide is booming. We are excited to open this milestone hotel and look forward to welcoming our guests,” Gallop remarked.
The hotel’s opening coincides with a record-breaking period for Adelaide’s accommodation sector.
The first half of 2024 saw unprecedented occupancy rates and revenue figures, driven by major events and conferences.
Jason Nuell, Marriott International’s Area Vice President for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific, expressed confidence in the hotel’s impact: “Located in the iconic GPO building, this hotel will become a true flagship property for Marriott Hotels as we continue to deliver contemporary design and elevated guest experiences.”
The Adelaide Marriott Hotel not only represents Marriott’s expansion into a new Australian market but also contributes to the city’s growing reputation as a premier destination for both leisure and business travellers.
