Consultation begins for Perth’s Burswood Park precinct

Consultation begins for Burswood Park precinct

The Western Australian government has launched a comprehensive community and stakeholder consultation process to shape the design and delivery of the new Perth Entertainment and Sporting Precinct at Burswood Park.

This initiative aims to transform the area into a vibrant hub for entertainment, sport, culture, and community events.

The proposed precinct is set to deliver on the Burswood Park 20-Year Vision, positioning the site as an iconic recreational and tourism destination.

The concept design features a state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheatre for major live music events, alongside a multi-use track and versatile building to accommodate a broad spectrum of sporting and cultural activities.

These include cycling, triathlons, running festivals, paralympic racing, community sports, and a marquee motorsport festival held annually.

WA Premier Roger Cook emphasised the project’s significance for the state’s cultural and economic future, stating: “This precinct presents Western Australia with the opportunity to position Perth as one of the major event capitals of the South East Asian region.”

The development is expected to diversify Western Australia’s economy and create new jobs, while also enhancing local amenities and connectivity.

A major focus of the precinct’s design will be improving transport links to and from Optus Stadium, with particular attention to accessibility for people with disabilities.

When not hosting major events, the area will remain open to the public, offering enhanced green spaces and community facilities.

To ensure the precinct meets the needs and aspirations of the community, feedback is being actively sought through an online consultation platform, mailouts to over 25,000 nearby households, and a series of public forums and feedback sessions scheduled in the coming months.

Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the importance of public input, noting: “Interested community and stakeholders can now contribute their ideas to an online consultation platform which feed into preliminary concept development.”

The WA government has also released a request for proposal, inviting contractors to express their interest in the design and delivery of the project.

A total of $217.5 million will be allocated in the upcoming State Budget to support the precinct’s development.

WA Symphony Orchestra Board Member and former Perth Festival Artistic Director Iain Grandage praised the vision for the new venue, remarking: “The amphitheatre promises to be a most extraordinary addition to the event spaces of Perth.”
