Significant upgrades are expected to commence at Torndirrup National Park this year, with the WA government committing $3.3 million to accommodate increasing visitation to the parks at The Gap and Natural Bridge.
Known for its spectacular coastline, turquoise water, and granite cliffs, ‘The Gap’ offers visitors panoramic views of the park’s rugged coastal scenery.
WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby said: “About 430,000 people visit Torndirrup National Park every year.
“These works are designed to provide an unforgettable experience for those visitors, who in turn will give back to the local economy, and create employment opportunities for Western Australians and local businesses.”
The commitment — which is the second stage of the state government’s ‘Torndirrup National Park improvement project’ — will involve:
- An increase in parking spaces to accommodate for 60 additional vehicles;
- Redevelopment of roads to provide smoother, safer access between sites; and
- Installation of toilets for visitors to ‘The Gap’s’ iconic picnicking area.
Contracts for the car park upgrades are due to be announced soon with construction of the bays and access road set to commence in July, minimising the effect works may have on visitation and local operators.
WA Premier Roger Cook said: “The Great Southern coastline is a jewel in the crown of WA’s unique tourism offerings.
“Upgrading facilities in the area will mean more people can experience this natural wonder for themselves.”
