  • Australia’s steel future hinges on containing energy costs

Burwood Brickworks housing development completed two years early

$700 million housing development completed two years early

Frasers Property Australia’s $700 million landmark community — Burwood Brickworks — is now complete with the opening of Middleborough Reserve; the community’s final piece of public open space.

The community, which consists of 241 townhomes, 16 freestanding houses and 496 apartments, is now home to an estimated 2000 residents.

Burwood Brickworks is 19 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD and also includes a sustainable shopping centre, convenient public transport links, plus close proximity to educational and dining precincts.

The first townhome stage of 22 residences sold out in one day, while subsequent stages sold out within a month of launch.

Apartments proved to be similarly popular, with 80 per cent of the first release selling out within the first six weeks — which enabled the subsequent apartment building to be brought forward by a year.

Burwood Brickworks has a strong focus on sustainability, with a 6-star Green Star Communities rating, and every apartment building and the retail centre benefitting from carbon neutral energy.

This includes the solar energy produced by the panels on each building, which are owned and run by Frasers Property’s fully-owned carbon-neutral energy supplier, Real Utilities.

Frasers Property Australia General Manager Development Victoria Sarah Bloom stated: “This development shows that you don’t have to choose between sustainability and liveability, and that there is appetite for medium density living — provided it comes with amenity, open space and a thoughtful community-building program.”

All residences are within 400 metres of open space and parkland, and the project’s retail dining and entertainment precinct become the first retail precinct to receive Living Building Challenge Petal Certification by the Living Future Institute of Australia (LFIA) in April 2021.

Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre includes a full-line Woolworths, speciality stores, restaurants and cafes, Reading Cinema complex and childcare centre.

Apartment construction began in 2019, while townhomes commenced in 2020.

The first residents moved in in 2021, and the construction of all apartments and townhomes were completed in September 2023.
