Multiplex has reached a major construction milestone on the $277 million St George Hospital redevelopment, “topping out” the facility at Gray Street, Kogarah.
The centrepiece of the $277 million redevelopment is the eight-level Acute Services Building, built above the new emergency department. It will feature an intensive care unit, high dependency unit, cardiac intensive care unit, eight additional operating theatres, extra acute inpatient beds, a sterilising services department, and a new rooftop helipad.
“We are delighted to have topped out the new Acute Services Building on schedule. We have drawn on our specialist expertise in delivering complex high-quality health facilities within a live hospital environment,” said Mr David Ghannoum, New South Wales Regional Managing Director at Multiplex.
Construction challenges faced include removal of the existing emergency department roof and construction of a new concrete structure directly above the 24-hour emergency department; tackling project logistics within a confined site; and working in a live hospital environment while maintaining business continuity for St George Hospital.
To date, a total of 10,000 cubic metres of concrete has been poured during construction, along with 800 tonnes of reinforcement and post tensioning cables cast within the slab.
Over 270,000 hours have been worked on the site to date and completion of the Acute Services Building is scheduled for completion by mid-2017.
Multiplex has successfully delivered several projects for Health Infrastructure including Royal North Shore Hospital’s Clinical Services Building, South East Regional Hospital in Bega and Byron Central Hospital.
