The Elevating Work Platform Association (EWPA) has unveiled its new Digital Yellow Card Operator Licence, marking a significant advancement in workplace safety for industries utilising elevating work platforms (EWPs).
This digital innovation aims to combat fraudulent certifications and ensure that all EWP operators have received proper training.
The EWPA Yellow Card program, established in 1987, has been a cornerstone of safety in EWP-related industries.
With over 500,000 operators trained by more than 200 accredited trainers across Australia, the Yellow Card has become widely recognised as a symbol of quality training and safety compliance.
The introduction of the Digital Yellow Card tackles the issue of counterfeit certifications, which have posed significant risks by allowing untrained individuals to operate machinery.
This new digital credential offers a secure and easily verifiable solution that cannot be duplicated or misused.
The Digital Yellow Card provides several notable features:
- Quick Verification: Employers and site supervisors can rapidly confirm the authenticity and currency of a worker’s certification.
- Detailed Training Records: The system allows employers to access information on the specific makes and models of EWPs that operators were trained on.
- Photographic Identification: Each training record includes a photo of the operator, enhancing security.
- Verification of Competency (VoC): Operators can build on their training records by capturing VoC in addition to their original EWP training.
The launch of the Digital Yellow Card is timely, coinciding with the implementation of industrial manslaughter laws across Australia.
These laws impose harsher penalties on organisations for preventable workplace incidents, underscoring the importance of proper training and certification for equipment operators.
In addition to the Digital Yellow Card, the EWPA has introduced:
- A digital version of the TSHA Gold Card for telehandlers
- Trademark protection for the term ‘Yellow Card’ to prevent unauthorised use by non-accredited providers
