Poor installation practice continues to be the major problem contributing to the performance of windows and glazed doors throughout Australia. Large amounts of time and money are spent investigating a ‘failed window system,’ only to discover the real issue is installation. In fact, around 80% of all window complaints are attributable to poor installation practice and care issues during the construction period.
The Australian Window Association’s (AWA) Marketing and Communications Manager Gary Smith comments, “poor installation has been the ‘Achilles’ heel’ of our industry for many years. The AWA has previously developed guidelines for best installation practice and made them readily available to industry, however they appear not to have adequately fixed the installation problems.”
“In direct response, we have now produced nine short instructional videos. This is phase one of our project, phase two will be the creation of an online training course and phase three will be the development of an accredited installation program. We hope that this project’s three steps will have a positive impact on our industry, and actively assist them in rectifying the problem,” said Gary.
The videos were made possible by the generous donation of funds and materials from A&L Windows, Bradnams Windows, Rylock Windows, G. James, Tremco, Architectural Window Systems, Alspec, Master Builders Association and Home Hardware.
The AWA’s series of instructional videos provide guidance to the industry on correct installation practice of windows and doors in different types of construction including, brick veneer, commercial block work, clad/lightweight and double brick.
