The Australian Government has announced it is a major sponsor of The Future Street, an installation set to provide a glimpse into our cities of the future.
The installation is to be part of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) International Festival of Landscape Architecture—a four-day celebration starting 12 October 2017 on conceiving, reimagining and transforming the outside world from streetscapes to parks and playgrounds, transport solutions to tourism strategies, to new suburbs and even cities.
AILA is collaborating with the Internet of Things Alliance Australia (IOTAA) and the Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand (SCCANZ) to build the street of the future in Sydney’s CBD.
Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor said he was very pleased to support such an exciting event, the first of its kind in Australia.
“The Future Street is an opportunity to showcase innovative ideas around landscape, infrastructure and technology to make our cities, suburbs and towns more liveable, productive and sustainable,” Assistant Minister Taylor said.
“The Australian Government is also working to unlock public and private sector co-investment in smart technology projects across the country through the $50 million Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.”
AILA CEO Tim Arnold said having the support of the Australian Government is confirmation of the importance of reimagining the role of important public spaces in our cities and towns.
“The digital transformation of the built environment is a key objective outlined in the Government’s Smart Cities Plan,” Mr Arnold said.
“I am also excited to announce Place Design Group will be our design partner of the installation, providing support in the layout, detailed design, and build-out of the project, with the support of our key partners including WE-EF Lighting, Lawn Solutions, Andreasens Green, Street Furniture Australia and Playrope.”
SCCANZ Executive Director, Adam Beck, said The Future Street is set to become a showcase for smart cities strategies and the internet of things, and that partners for the installation will also include Buddy, Ene Hub, Utillix, Itron, BYKKO and Telstra.
The Future Street, taking place in Alfred Street in front of Customs House, Circular Quay, will open for public viewing during the Festival of Landscape Architecture, 12-15 October 2017, and showcase a range of landscape, Internet of Things, utilities, transportation, urban design and place making features. The installation will be supported by a program of topical discussions and case studies. It is also planned that the installation will gather and report on real time data, highlighting the capabilities of technology, and the effectiveness of various deployed strategies.
