One of Australia’s most renowned architects, Glen Murcutt AO, has just been announced as the esteemed designer of MPavillion 2019.
Mr Murcutt is the only Australian recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2002) and is internationally recognised for environmentally sensitive and responsible designs with a distinctly Australian character.
Now in its sixth year, the MPavillion is an annual series of architecture commissions initiated by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and supported by the City of Melbourne, the State Government of Victoria through Creative Victoria, and ANZ.
Each year the Naomi Milgrom Foundation commissions an outstanding architect to design a pavilion for the Queen Victoria Gardens in Melbourne, drawing in crowds from across the state and the nation.
The 2018 MPavillion welcomed Barcelona-based architect and educator Carme Pinós of Estudio Carme Pinós as the honoured designer, whose origami-like architecture made headlines for celebrating urban livability as well as sharp but poetic, experimental design.
Founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation Naomi Milgrom AO said she is thrilled to be working with Mr Murcutt on this year’s MPavillion.
“He’s been at the forefront of contemporary architecture for decades with groundbreaking designs that are sensitive to landscape and cross-cultural collaboration.”
“Quintessentially Australian and ahead of his time, Glenn’s thoughtfulness about people, placemaking and the environment continues to inspire us all,” she said.
Mr Murcutt also had high praises for Ms Milgrom and what she has achieved through the program.
“MPavilion is an interesting and assiduous project, and I’m honoured to be commissioned,” he commented.
MPavillion 2019 will be open in the Queen Victoria Gardens, Southbank Arts Precinct on 12 November 2019.
