A new tower in Brisbane CBD, designed by leading Australian architecture and urban design and planning practice Architectus, in collaboration with Brisbane-based Bureau Probert, is set to enhance the city’s laneway network and create a dynamic composition on the skyline.
The 62 Mary Street development will introduce a fourth tower while connecting three major existing commercial buildings with a pedestrianised street, significantly expanding the space available to public and enhancing the walkability of the inner city.
The new design includes a naturally ventilated atrium and landscaped rooftop terraces to provide ample access to fresh air, while the light exterior of the tower was designed with vertical sun shading to make it stand out from the existing darker builds in the Brisbane CBD.
Architectus Managing Director, Ray Brown, said the design utilised complex dimensions in order to meet the location’s size constraints.
“A major design challenge was to provide large floor plates within a restricted envelope. We achieved this through an efficient laminated core design that maximises the net area and by increasing the floorplate once above our neighbour at 54 Mary Street.
The low-rise office floors of the new tower will match the height of neighbouring 54 Mary Street, with a landscaped terrace separating this from the upper levels which have a wider ground area.
“It’s a very exciting project allowing us to create a tall and elegant tower that will stand out on the Brisbane skyline and reenergise the area with a new laneway network.”
Architectus has a wealth of expertise in the commercial space, having worked on a number of major CBD projects including Wynyard Place, 100 Mount Street and 1 Bligh Street, Sydney.
