Why a Perched Water Table would be beneficial for your natural turf Field of Play

In a previous article (available on Build Australia website), we’ve explained why choosing the right rootzone sand profile is essential for your natural turf Field of Play. A sand rootzone growing medium usually provides a high infiltration rate and will consist of either of the following: A processed sand to meet a specification A naturally occurring sand (i.e. dune or river sand) The depth of the rootzone sand layer is generally not less than 250mm, depending on the relationship between moisture retention and infiltration of the material and is informed by the capillary fringe. The inclusion of a drainage gravel blanket beneath the rootzone sand layer facilitates the accumulation of water at the interface of the two material layers. This forms the capillary fringe and is known as a Perched Water Table (PWT) profile (see below). [caption id="attachment_32668" align="ali... more

Redeveloping an historical sport venue

Recently, SPORTENG applied its knowledge to the redevelopment of the Olympic Park. Formerly known as the Olympic Park Village, it was constructed for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. The Heidelberg venue was used as the official warm-up for the Olympics and consisted of a cinder running track. The facility is home to the Heidelberg United Football Club and prior to the redevelopment works commencing, the facility still consisted of the original porous athletics running track, and the infield was used as the soccer pitch. The challenge Due to its historical past, the site has not been without its challenges. Buried topsoil one meter beneath the existing surface, construction rubble and contaminated soils are some of the latent conditions that have been worked through during the construction phase. Having worked closely with Council to develop the master plan for the redevelopmen... more

Sydney Town Hall Building

Sydney Town Hall Building draped in life-like wrap

As the 140-year-old building enters the final stages of a once-in-a-lifetime restoration, the Southern and Western facades of the Sydney Town Hall have been lined with eco-vinyl hoardings and the building has been draped in a life-like building wrap to conceal the much anticipated on-site conservation process. Restoring a city gem Plans to restore the iconic landmark and introduce sustainability elements began in 2012. In addition to restoring the clock tower, the sandstone will be polished, repaired and replaced with local Sydney sandstone to ensure the heritage building can be appreciated for many generations to come.
