ASI scheme to improve steel sustainability wins international award

An Australian Steel Institute (ASI) certification scheme designed to improve environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards across the steel supply chain has received global recognition at an industry awards ceremony in London.

The Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) program was presented with the Excellence in Sustainability award by constructsteel, a program run by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), which represents the international steel community.

SSA manager Melinda Coles said the scheme’s ability to drive meaningful sustainability improvements by extending certification beyond primary steel mills to downstream suppliers and manufacturing sites.

“By extending sustainability certification beyond crude steel mills to downstream suppliers and manufacturing sites, the scheme helps ensure that steel products used in our infrastructure and built environments are sourced and manufactured by sustainability-certified businesses throughout the supply chain,” Coles said.

Australian representatives secured two of the three international constructsteel categories presented during the event.

ASI member Rondo Building Services won the Innovation of the Year award for its ceiling framing project at Western Sydney International Airport, an entry that previously earned top state honours at the ASI Steel Excellence Awards for NSW.

The final category, Best Project of the Year, was awarded to the UK’s Hill Dickinson Stadium development.

ASI chief executive Mark Cain commended the local steel community’s collective efforts toward industrial decarbonisation and supply chain transparency.

“When you see the competition that our entries from Australia were up against, it makes this year’s achievement of winning two of the three categories even more impressive,” Cain said.

The Australian steel sector generates approximately $30 billion in annual revenue and supports 100,000 jobs nationwide.
