Panasonic unveils Toughbook 56 with advanced rugged mobility

Panasonic has announced the TOUGHBOOK 56, describing it as the biggest step forward in compact, rugged and ergonomic mobility in the company’s history.
Available from July 2026, the device succeeds the TOUGHBOOK 55 and is the first TOUGHBOOK built around Panasonic’s Engineered for Motion philosophy, which prioritises ergonomics for remote workers in defence, field services, utilities and automotive sectors.
Marc Amelung, General Manager of the Mobile Solutions Group at Panasonic Australia, said mobile workers and the IT teams supporting them need technology that can withstand frontline and field conditions.
He noted the TOUGHBOOK 56 was engineered for high-end computing with AI at the edge and strong security features, and added that TOUGHBOOK has spent three decades serving industries that cannot compromise on performance, security or durability.
The new model introduces a wider, retractable ErgoGrip Handle with textured resin designed to reduce fatigue and maintain a secure hold during extended carrying.
A redesigned, latch-free ErgoGrip Edge allows one-handed operation, including while wearing gloves, and a retractable ErgoGrip Hinge mechanism protects the screen during transport and opening.
Connectivity is a standout feature.
The TOUGHBOOK 56 is the first rugged laptop to support up to three simultaneous wired LAN connections, offering speeds of 1Gb, 2.5Gb and an optional 10Gb.
Users can switch between connections depending on task requirements.
With the 10Gb module, an 80Gb file can transfer in roughly 95 seconds, a capability Panasonic states benefits defence teams downloading data across multiple devices, telecom workers conducting fibre testing and transferring IoT sensor data, and automotive R&D teams running diagnostics across separate channels.
The device also includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and optional integrated 4G private network support.
On-screen efficiency has also improved.
The 14-inch display now uses a 16:10 aspect ratio rather than the 16:9 ratio of its predecessor, giving workers more room to view data-heavy, AI-powered visuals.
A 10-finger capacitive touchscreen variant is available, featuring an upgraded Auto Mode that automatically detects whether a user is operating the device with fingers, gloves, a pen, or a combination, and switches modes accordingly.
Brightness ranges from 1000 cd/m² for outdoor visibility down to 1 cd/m² for discreet use in low light settings.
Performance gets a significant boost through the most powerful Intel AI Boost neural processing unit fitted to any TOUGHBOOK to date, enabling edge-based data collection and analysis without a cloud connection.
The base configuration uses the Intel Core Ultra 5 processor 235H with Intel vPro, while the Core Ultra 7 processor 265H offers additional power.
Running Windows 11 Pro, the laptop supports user-upgradable RAM and SSD, along with an optional AMD Radeon W7500M 8GB graphics chip for tasks such as 3D mapping, simulation and CAD work.
Panasonic has retained its modular-first design approach, with three expansion areas and compatibility with most TOUGHBOOK 55 peripherals.
Battery life reaches up to 12 hours on a single charge, or 24 hours with two hot-swappable batteries.
The device is designed with reference to MIL STD 810H standards and carries an IP53 rating for water and dust resistance.
The TOUGHBOOK 56 will be available this July through TOUGHBOOKs authorised distributor and reseller network.
