The Western Australian government has taken a significant step towards addressing the accommodation needs of Aboriginal people in Western Australia.
On January 7, 2025, the government released a Request for Tender (RFT) for the construction of the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation in Cannington.
This facility, set to be Western Australia’s fifth Aboriginal Short Stay, will provide safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable accommodation for up to 100 guests.
The building will feature a mix of universal access, family, double, and single units.
Housing and Homelessness Minister John Carey emphasised the importance of this project, stating: “Western Australia’s existing Aboriginal Short Stays have been critical in improving outcomes for Aboriginal people in the regions by providing a safe and secure place to stay.”
The construction tender is open to contractors shortlisted on the Department of Communities’ Housing Construction and Refurbishment Builders Panel.
Interested parties can access the RFT, which will remain open until March 2025, through the official Western Australian tenders website.
Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Tony Buti highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating: “The Cook Labor government understands how important Aboriginal Short Stays are in providing important and welcoming accommodation options for guests who may otherwise have no accommodation during their visits.”
Currently, three Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodations are operational in Kalgoorlie, Derby, and Broome, with a fourth under construction in Geraldton.
These facilities have proven crucial in reducing rough sleeping and overcrowding while supporting Aboriginal visitors from regional, remote, and metropolitan areas.
Cannington MLA Bill Johnston expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting that extensive local consultation has been conducted with Traditional Owners and the community to ensure the facility meets local needs.
The Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation represents a significant investment in culturally appropriate housing solutions and demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people in Western Australia.
