WA government advances Women and Babies Hospital Project with car park construction

WA government advances Women and Babies Hospital Project with car park construction

The Western Australian government is taking significant steps towards the realisation of the new Women and Babies Hospital Project, awarding Georgiou Group the contract to design and construct the western car park.

This multi-deck car park, the first of two planned for the project, will be built along Jennalup Drive.

Design work is set to commence immediately, with the car park aimed at supporting the precinct’s future growth as it prepares to house the new world-class Women and Babies Hospital.

The Department of Transport’s Office of Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery is overseeing the car park’s construction and is also investigating improvements to transport networks to reduce congestion and enhance access to the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct.

As part of these improvements, a precinct study is underway to develop innovative solutions for enhancing pedestrian and cyclist access, while promoting increased use of public transport.

This development follows the WA government’s recent progress in appointing a managing contractor for the landmark hospital project.

Last month, global construction company Webuild and Australian construction company Roberts Co, as joint venture partners, signed a letter of intent with the state government.

The new Women and Babies Hospital project aims to expand services and choice for women, newborns, and families across Western Australia, replacing the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital.

WA Premier Roger Cook highlighted the state government’s commitment to the project, stating: “We’re committed to delivering a new Women and Babies Hospital and we know how critical it is to get construction underway for thousands of more car bays, which will significantly benefit those who visit or work at the precinct.”

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti shone light on the project’s broader impact, stating: “This project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering key quality infrastructure that supports our continued growth and local jobs in our community.”

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson underscored the importance of the car parks, noting: “Car parking is fundamental to all hospital projects and these two new multi-deck car parks will improve access for all patients, staff, and visitors to both Fiona Stanley Hospital and our new Women and Babies Hospital.”

The new Women and Babies Hospital project is expected to create more than 1,400 local jobs during construction and provide opportunities for local suppliers and contractors.

With construction of the first car park expected to start in 2025, the WA government continues to advance its vision for a world-class healthcare facility to meet the needs of Western Australian women and families into the future.
