A $5.8 million contract to complete the Jetty Road causeway upgrades at Casuarina Boat Harbour in Bunbury was recently awarded.
The Jetty Road causeway forms the eastern boundary of Casuarina Boat Harbour and was originally connected to the Bunbury timber jetty (seaward section removed in 2012).
Early investigations by the Department of Transport found the causeway to be in poor condition.
Phase One works (commenced in early November 2018) saw approximately 24,000 tonnes of rock placed in the water using specialised long reach excavators to improve protection of the causeway during storm events.
The $3.5 million Phase One works contract reached practical completion in April 2019.
On Friday 12 July 2019, Densford Civil Pty Ltd, successfully tendered for Phase Two of the upgrade.
Phase Two works include the reconstruction of Jetty Road, increased parking with 164 bays, the introduction of shared paths and landscaping, the construction of a multipurpose building incorporating public toilets, and improvements to utility services in the area.
The $5.8 million contract will see five South-West subcontractors, four of them Bunbury-based businesses, with a workforce of 20, engaged in the construction from August 2019 ahead of targeted completion in mid-2020.
Premier Mark McGowan said upgrading the Bunbury Waterfront was one of their key election commitments and he is pleased this contract has been awarded to a local company.
“The involvement of local contractors in the delivery of Phase Two work will stimulate the building and construction industry in Bunbury and across the broader South-West, and create local job opportunities,” he said.
“When complete, the upgrade will encourage more tourists to visit Bunbury and help stimulate the growth of local industries.”
