The long-awaited revitalisation of the Surry Hills Shopping Village is now one step closer thanks to leading Australian property group, TOGA, lodging a development application for the site and announcing the winners of the design excellence competition.
Overseen by a panel of industry experts, the design excellence competition featured submissions from four established Australian architectural firms, who each collaborated with four emerging architects. After detailed analysis and consideration of community and stakeholder feedback, local architects SJB + Studio Prineas were confirmed as the winners.
The jury noted that SJB + Studio Prineas’ design reflected the existing fabric and history of the area, with their design delivering a subtle blend of raw and natural materials.
The mixed-use development will feature a double-storey retail precinct, commercial space and public pocket park at the rear of the site. Located on the corner of Cleveland and Baptist Street, the new Surry Hills Village will comprise approximately 157 apartments, including luxury terraces and a boutique Penthouse collection.
SJB + Studio Prineas, in collaboration with Redfern landscape architectural firm, Aspect Studios, have been selected to further develop their winning design concept for the site. BKH Interiors have been engaged alongside SJB to deliver the interior schemes for the apartments and penthouse collections.
TOGA Managing Director, Allan Vidor, explained that the brief to the architects was to fulfil functional necessity and express the local character of the community whilst paying respect to the buildings rich history.
“The winning design maintains the beautiful heritage of the building, also creating contemporary, welcoming spaces for people to live, shop, work, socialise or simply be in,” Mr Vidor said, “we are so proud to bring Surry Hills Village to life.”
“It’s rare to find a development that offers a balance of luxury residential, bespoke retail, green space, history and culture all in one location. We’re thrilled the appointed team is not only award-winning but also made up of local Surry Hills residents, with an exceptional passion and knowledge for the neighbourhood.”
“The combined expertise of SJB, Studio Prineas, BKH Interiors and Aspect Studios will rejuvenate this historic site into a vibrant destination that will enrich its residents, visitors and the community,” he shared.
The new precinct will deliver public spaces including a new 517 square metre public park and market-style laneway. Additionally, close to 12,000 square metres of commercial and retail space will be provided with a diverse mix of Surry Hills’ finest providores and restaurateurs, as well as the retention of the Coles supermarket.
Construction is forecast to commence in mid to late 2019 and be finalised by early 2022.
