NSW government to advance major housing development

NSW government to advance major housing development

The New South Wales government has announced the development of approximately 48 new homes, including social and affordable housing, at Betty Cuthbert Drive in Lidcombe, Sydney’s western suburbs.

This project is part of the NSW government’s Building Homes for New South Wales program, which aims to deliver up to 30,000 homes on government-owned sites statewide.

The initiative prioritises the construction of 8,400 new public homes, with a focus on supporting women and children fleeing violence.

Homes NSW will acquire freehold ownership of the 3.16-hectare site following an agreement with Property and Development NSW (PDNSW).

Under the plan, the land will be subdivided into 38 lots to accommodate 48 new homes, of which 18 will be designated social and affordable dwellings.

The proposal comes after a successful rezoning process and is pending final subdivision registration by Land Registry Services.

These new homes will be located adjacent to the recently opened Lidcombe Wellbeing Centre, operated by multiple sclerosis awareness organisation MS Plus.

The centre was funded through a $16 million NSW government agreement and opened its doors in March.

Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said: “The Minns government has made housing our number one priority, and this is yet another example of our efforts to deliver a range of housing options that will give everyone a chance to have a roof over their heads.

“We understand we need to build better communities, and every home counts. These plans will deliver a mixed-use community here at Lidcombe, which is close to shops, transport and other key services, which delivers housing, and an important wellness centre for MS Plus.”

Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson added: “This is another important step in our mission to build more homes for the people of NSW, especially in growing communities like Western Sydney.

“We’re turning underused government land into real homes, including new social and affordable housing for people who need it most.”

Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper stated that the government has achieved the largest growth in public housing in more than 10 years and is continuing to support this progress with additional projects like the Lidcombe development.

He emphasised that this effort forms part of the most extensive housing construction initiative in New South Wales’ history, driven by the belief that everyone deserves a safe and secure home.

Homes NSW will now begin finalising concept plans to progress the enabling works at the site, advancing this significant step toward addressing housing demand in the region.
