New York, US — The Soloviev Group has released new renderings of Freedom Plaza, a transformative civic and cultural development set to reshape Manhattan’s East Side.
Designed by the renowned BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the 6.3-acre project stretches from 38th to 41st Street east of First Avenue and is poised to deliver the largest influx of new homes in central Manhattan in more than ten years.
Freedom Plaza will introduce 1,049 residential units, with 513 of these earmarked as affordable housing, marking a significant milestone in the city’s inclusionary housing efforts.
The mixed-use development will also feature approximately five acres of public open space designed by OJB Landscape Architecture, locally focused retail, and a diverse array of shopping and dining experiences.
“Freedom Plaza represents a transformative vision for Manhattan’s East Side, blending residential, cultural, and commercial spaces to create a thriving community that supports both working-class families and the region’s continued economic growth,” said Michael Hershman, CEO of Soloviev Group.
The project, constructed exclusively with union labour, will also offer a range of community-focused amenities, including a daycare centre, food market, museum, and community centre.
Two hotels, developed in partnership with resort company Mohegan and the owners of Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, will further enhance the area’s hospitality offerings.
Soloviev Group and Mohegan have emphasised their commitment to job creation, supporting local vendors, stimulating economic growth at both local and state levels, and funding much-needed infrastructure improvements.
“Freedom Plaza embodies our commitment to creating vibrant, sustainable communities that drive economic growth and enrich local cultures,” said Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault.
“By partnering with Soloviev Group, we are excited to bring world-class hospitality, inclusive housing, and transformative economic opportunities to Manhattan’s East Side.”
The project has garnered broad support from the labour community, with 26 key New York labour organisations and workforce development partners signing memorandums of understanding in support of Freedom Plaza.
As construction moves forward, Freedom Plaza is set to become a landmark destination, blending housing, culture, and commerce while supporting the city’s broader goals of affordability, inclusivity, and economic vitality.
