The Victorian Government, together with Monash Health, have officially opened the new Monash Children’s Hospital, providing a state of the art medical service to the children and families of Victoria.
Lendlease was responsible for the design management, procurement and construction of the $250 million project and delivered additional scope, such as the installation and commissioning of a rooftop helipad, all within the contracted timeframe.
The 230-bed hospital will have capacity to treat an extra 7000 children each year and incorporates the latest in design and technology in a child and family-friendly environment. Its features include a helipad, on-site accommodation for families in emergency circumstances, and indoor/outdoor age-specific entertainment spaces.
The specialist facility also hosts Victoria’s largest neonatal intensive care unit and special care unit.
Lendlease Chief Executive Officer of Building, Dale Connor, said the completion of such an important project had brought a great sense of pride to the Lendlease team responsible for the construction of the hospital.
“It has been a privilege to be a part of the Monash Health community throughout the construction of such a transformative project and we are extremely proud to be leaving behind a positive legacy,” he said.
Mr Connor said a highlight of the project was the working partnership between Lendlease, the Department of Health and Human Services, and Monash Health.
“The Lendlease team worked collaboratively with the Department of Health and Human Services and Monash Health for the duration of the project to overcome the challenges of working in and around an operational hospital environment.
“This included major works within two metres of the existing Radiology Department which operates most days of the week, and the construction of a new back-of-house tunnel beneath the existing Nuclear Medicine Department,” Mr Connor said.
“We also installed two elevated link bridges to create connectivity between the new and old buildings, and all works were successfully carried out with no major disruption.”
More than 60 subcontractors and suppliers comprising 400 construction workers were engaged to bring together this highly complex building within the contracted timeframe.
The Monash Children’s Hospital is the latest addition to Lendlease’s growing healthcare portfolio which includes in Victoria the new Bendigo Hospital, the Joan Kirner Children’s and Women’s Hospital currently under construction, the Royal Children’s Hospital, and the Box Hill Hospital; and in Queensland the Centre for Children’s Health Research, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
