New Dubbo Bridge project reaches milestone in construction

The New Dubbo Bridge, a transformative infrastructure project in western New South Wales, has reached a significant milestone with one-third of its concrete deck now in place.

This $263.2 million joint venture between the Australian and NSW governments is set to reshape the region’s transportation landscape.

The 660-metre bridge structure, crossing the Macquarie River and a section of the floodplain, is being constructed in sections.

Each section requires approximately 105 cubic metres of concrete, creating a deck slab up to 25 centimetres thick.

The final deck pour is anticipated in mid-2025, followed by an eight-centimetre asphalt layer to complete the bridge surface.

Recent developments include:

  • Completion of pile driving along the entire bridge length
  • Ongoing construction of connecting road networks
  • Road widening at key intersections in Dubbo

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026, weather permitting.

The Australian government has committed $210.6 million to the project, with the NSW government providing the remaining $52.6 million.

This investment is expected to yield significant benefits:

  • Improved flood resilience
  • Enhanced housing opportunities, supporting infrastructure for an estimated 5,500 homes
  • Creation of nearly 1,500 direct and indirect jobs in western NSW

The New Dubbo Bridge project is already making a positive impact on the local economy.

More than half of the workforce consists of local residents, including apprentices and aspiring tradespersons.

Additionally, 74 local businesses and eight Aboriginal businesses have been engaged since the start of major construction.

Upon completion, the New Dubbo Bridge will significantly improve traffic flow through Dubbo, reducing congestion and enhancing access across the Macquarie River, particularly during flood events.

It is set to become the largest bridge in Central Western NSW, improving travel efficiency and route reliability for both local commuters and freight operators.

This project represents a major step forward in regional infrastructure development, promising to set Dubbo and western NSW up for a more connected and prosperous future.
