Construction of the new $67.6 million Laverton Hospital is now complete, marking a major milestone for healthcare in the Goldfields and ensuring more Western Australians can access the care they need regardless of where they live.
The WA Country Health Service is working to have the hospital operational for Laverton and surrounding residents this month.
The facility includes a modern emergency department equipped with telehealth technology, flexible overnight care beds and specialist spaces for visiting clinicians.
It will also host outpatient services, community and child health, mental health and allied health services, along with room for an onsite private GP clinic.
Construction was carried out by Western Australian builder ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd, a result Premier Roger Cook said had delivered benefits beyond the finished building.
“Importantly, this project has also supported local jobs and economic activity during construction, with Western Australian builder ADCO Constructions delivering this major piece of regional infrastructure,” said Cook.
The hospital forms part of the WA government’s record $5.5 billion health infrastructure program.
It was also supported by a $16.8 million contribution from the federal government’s Community Health and Hospitals Program, which helped bring the project to completion.
The new hospital is expected to reduce the distances patients and families in the region need to travel for treatment.
Laverton is a remote community in the Eastern Goldfields, and access to local emergency and outpatient care has been a long-standing priority for residents.
The telehealth capability of the emergency department will allow clinicians in Laverton to connect with doctors and specialists elsewhere, expanding the level of expertise available on site.
Overnight flexible care beds will allow patients to be treated and monitored locally rather than being transferred out of town where clinically appropriate.
The inclusion of space for visiting specialists and a private GP clinic is designed to broaden the range of services available in a single location.
Community and child health services will operate alongside mental health and allied health care, creating a central point for health support in the town.
Health Minister and Acting Health Infrastructure Minister Meredith Hammat said the facility would offer a comprehensive range of care for the local community, with the emergency department a key feature.
Goldfields-Esperance Minister David Michael said the project reflected the government’s focus on regional health, while Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent described the completed construction as an eagerly awaited milestone for the region.
The hospital is part of a broader program of health infrastructure works being delivered across the State, which the government says is aimed at providing hospitals, health services and healthcare jobs to communities from the metropolitan area to the regions.
With construction finished, attention now turns to the final stages of commissioning and the transition to full operations.
Once open, the hospital will provide Laverton and surrounding communities with a modern, locally accessible health service designed to meet the needs of the region for years to come.
Further details on the opening date and service arrangements are expected to be released by the WA Country Health Service as the hospital prepares to welcome its first patients.
