SCOTLAND — A new medical and dental centre at Leuchars Station has reached a significant milestone, topping out after months of construction.
The £22 million facility, managed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and constructed by Graham Building North, will provide enhanced healthcare services to British Army personnel and their families.
The state-of-the-art centre is set to replace the existing medical facility, which was originally built in 1936.
Once operational, it will offer a comprehensive range of services, including physical rehabilitation, mental health support, and general practitioner (GP) and dental services.
The facility is designed to cater to the needs of approximately 3,700 military personnel and their dependents, accommodating the anticipated increase in personnel as Leuchars Station evolves into the army’s Scottish hub.
Sustainability has been a key priority in the design of the new centre.
The facility incorporates several eco-friendly features, including thermal efficiency measures, solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and four electric vehicle charging stations.
The selection of building materials focused on minimising environmental impact, positioning the centre as a model for future Ministry of Defence medical and dental facilities in terms of sustainable construction practices.
With the building now at its full height, the focus is shifting to the interior fit-out.
Following the completion of the interior work, a transition from the old to the new centre will take place, after which the outdated facility will be demolished by Graham.
Shaun Purdy, DIO project manager, commented on the milestone: “Reaching this milestone, with completion of the structure, means it’s easy for both the medical staff and other personnel at Leuchars to see the scale of this new facility and how well-suited it will be for their needs.
“Our focus now moves to the interior of the building as we look forward to the completion of the building in the coming months.”
Chris MacLeod, regional director at Graham Building North, added: “Our team have been working diligently to deliver this medical and dental facility for our longstanding client, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.
“With the frame completed, we can now visualise this sustainable, state-of-the-art building and the services it will provide for the military personnel and their families at Leuchars and in the wider region.”
This project follows DIO’s recent award of a £65m contract to Galliford Try for the construction of single living accommodation at Royal Air Force Digby in Lincolnshire, England, earlier this month.
