Construction on a AU$14.9 million upgrade to marine infrastructure at the Port of Esperance is set to begin in the coming months, following the construction contract awarded for tug jetties.
Advanteering Civil Engineers has secured the contract to deliver the new purpose-built facility, drawing on its extensive experience with marine projects. The scope of works includes the supply and installation of new piles, bollards, and fenders, replacing existing service jetties that have reached the end of their operational life.
The upgrade will double the port’s tug berthing capacity, expanding space from two to four tugboats. The new jetties are vital to supporting the towage vessels that assist safe shipping movements at the key southern trade hub.
Demolition of the existing jetties is scheduled to begin in January, with full construction expected to wrap up in the first half of 2027.
“The new tug facility at the Port of Esperance will create additional capacity for tugs within the Port of Esperance, a critical southern gateway for regional trade,” said Ports Minister Stephen Dawson said.
“Upgrading facilities at WA ports is vital to ensuring they continue to connect our regional miners and producers to global opportunities without interruption.”
Southern Ports COE Keith Wilks noted that the port handled more than 180 vessel calls last year, underscoring the need for reliable infrastructure.
“It’s critical that the Port’s tugs have a suitable place to be moored between movements so that they are ready to work with our marine team and visiting vessel masters around the clock,” Wilks said.
