Multiplex completes Sydney’s Chatswood Chase redevelopment

03 Nov, 2025
Multiplex completes Chatswood Chase redevelopment successfully

Multiplex has delivered Vicinity Centres’ $300 million redevelopment of Chatswood Chase on Sydney’s North Shore, transforming the iconic shopping centre into a modern, sustainable retail and dining destination.

Located at 345 Victoria Avenue and 5 Havilah Street, the landmark project showcases a striking new design by architectural firms Make & Webber.

The revitalised centre now encompasses 84,000 square metres of floor space across five levels — an expansion of 20,000 square metres — and features more than 100 new retail tenancies, including the new Chase Market food hall on the Lower Ground floor.

“We’re thrilled to have completed this landmark redevelopment, breathing new life into one of the North Shore’s most iconic shopping destinations,” said Murphy.

“It builds on our track record of delivering transformative retail precincts across Australia.”

Patrick Murphy, Multiplex Regional Director, said the completion carries particular significance as Multiplex originally delivered the Chatswood Chase shopping centre in the early 1980s.

The redevelopment incorporates modern sustainability measures, targeting a 4-Star Green Star Design and As-Built rating and a 4.5 NABERS rating.

Multiplex also upgraded multiple entryways, including those on Victoria Avenue, Archer Street, and Havilah Street.

The main Victoria Avenue entrance now features a mirror-clad awning with programmable lighting, while new skylit atria and voids have been introduced to enhance natural light and open space throughout the centre.

Improved visitor accessibility includes the installation of 13 new lifts and 26 new escalators, complemented by upgraded public amenities across the complex.

Construction works spanned 19 months, with between 350 and 400 workers onsite on average and peak numbers reaching 900 during the shopfitting phase.

The project presented unique challenges, as construction occurred in a live retail environment with key tenants such as Coles, Kmart, and David Jones continuing to operate.

Works were carefully staged to maintain customer access from existing car parks and street entries.

Multiplex used approximately 1,000 tonnes of bespoke structural steel and four kilometres of carbon fibre during the redevelopment, along with 15,000 square metres of new tiling throughout the malls and amenities.

The contractor leveraged state-of-the-art logistics management software and the centre’s loading dock to manage deliveries of materials, balancing construction logistics with retail operations and stock deliveries for existing tenants.

Further innovations included temporary catch decks and roof areas used during construction to allow work on new voids while maintaining dry trading conditions for tenants below.

Extensive demolition, strengthening, and structural sequencing were also carried out to reconfigure mall layouts and relocate plant equipment and services without interruption.

Over 500 truncations were made to the existing post-tensioned slab to facilitate the new works.

Enhancements to operational efficiency and flood mitigation included the installation of a new 1000L stormwater tank, syphonic drainage system, and automatic flood barriers.

Now open to the public, the redeveloped Chatswood Chase stands as a renewed retail landmark on Sydney’s North Shore, reflecting both architectural innovation and complex project delivery by Multiplex.
