Major traffic disruptions expected on West Gate Freeway this weekend for crane removal

Major traffic disruptions expected on West Gate Freeway this weekend for crane removal

Motorists in Melbourne’s west are being urged to plan ahead as significant traffic disruptions are set to impact the West Gate Freeway this weekend.

The Victorian government’s West Gate Tunnel Project will temporarily close outbound lanes and ramps to dismantle a massive 50-metre-high tower crane that has been instrumental in constructing the outbound tunnel exit between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.

The crane, which has played a key role in lifting components of the tunnel ventilation structure over the past two years, will be dismantled piece by piece.

Its removal marks a milestone in the progress of the West Gate Tunnel Project, which is expected to be completed later this year.

From Friday, 11 April at 11:59 pm until Monday, 14 April at 5:00 am, motorists should expect delays of up to an hour as the West Gate Freeway will be reduced to two outbound lanes between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.

Additionally:

  • Full outbound lane closures will occur overnight on Friday and Sunday between Williamstown Road and Millers Road to set up and dismantle a 450-tonne crane assisting with the works.
  • Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will remain closed throughout the weekend.

Drivers are advised to avoid the West Gate Bridge during this period and plan alternative routes or allow extra travel time.

The West Gate Tunnel Project continues to advance, with recent works including resurfacing sections of the freeway, installing road barriers, and finalising the layout of inbound express lanes.

Once completed, the project will provide a vital second river crossing, easing congestion on the West Gate Bridge and improving travel across Melbourne’s west.

It is also expected to reduce truck traffic on local roads by up to 9,000 vehicles daily by the end of 2025.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams emphasised the importance of planning ahead during these disruptions.

“Works are progressing well on the West Gate Tunnel’s twin tunnels, which will help take 9,000 trucks off local roads,” she said.

“During the weekend works, plan ahead and allow extra time to get where you need to go.”
