Ground has officially broken on the $166.1 million redevelopment of the Geraldton Health Campus, marking the biggest upgrade to the hospital since the early 2000s.
The project is now underway with managing contractor Multiplex leading the construction efforts.
The extensive redevelopment will deliver several key improvements to enhance healthcare services in the Mid West region.
This includes an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit co-located with an improved high-dependency unit, and an integrated mental health service featuring an adult inpatient unit and a short-stay unit.
WA Premier Roger Cook emphasised the importance of the project, stating: “My government will always do what’s right by Mid West residents, and I’m proud to be delivering on what will be the biggest redevelopment of Geraldton Health Campus since the early 2000s.”
WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson highlighted the investment’s impact: “This major investment will improve access to important health services — including an expanded emergency department, new intensive care unit and mental health service. It’s an investment in our future to ensure Mid-West patients have access to the highest quality healthcare for years to come.”
The redevelopment aims to bring the latest in healthcare technology, infrastructure, and patient-centred design to enhance the overall patient experience.
It is estimated to employ more than 800 workers throughout the project’s duration and create opportunities for Aboriginal businesses through various subcontracts.
Preparatory works have already been completed, including the addition of 400 new car bays, reconfiguration of the main entrance, and a new ambulance entry.
Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton, who utilises the hospital herself, expressed her enthusiasm: “I live in Geraldton and use this hospital and I’m so pleased to see the start of construction. This redevelopment will deliver high-quality facilities for the local community and complement the outstanding care received at the hospital.”
The Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment is a significant investment in the region’s healthcare infrastructure, ensuring Mid West residents have access to high-quality healthcare services for decades to come.
